Alchemy for Impact: Methods to Convert Trauma and Lived Experience Into Innovation
This session demonstrates how lived experience and trauma can inspire system-level innovation in healthcare. Drawing on a lived-experience clinical case study rooted in pediatric oncology and complex care, this session identifies systemic barriers that hinder access to care and shares advocacy methods, including an innovation design framework, that enhance coordination and collaboration. This session will also feature an example of how the creative arts can honor dignity, validate emotional experiences, and improve outcomes for patients, families, and clinical teams.
About Erica
I’m a strategic communications and experience leader with over 18 years of experience shaping brand, messaging, and executive presence across complex, regulated industries. While my foundation is rooted in healthcare, including clinical radiology, B2B healthcare technology, early-stage startups, and multinational organizations, my approach is industry-agnostic. I focus on building trust, clarity, and credibility wherever communication drives outcomes.
I specialize in executive thought leadership and corporate storytelling that positions leaders as authoritative voices and differentiates organizations in a crowded landscape. My work includes investor and product communications, crisis and reputation strategy, and messaging frameworks that scale from early-stage to enterprise.
My advocacy is powered by lived experience. As the former primary caregiver to my late son, I bring a firsthand understanding of the systemic gaps in healthcare. That perspective shapes how I approach systems design, innovation strategy, and communication, ensuring that both analog and digital solutions better serve real people.
I focus on the ethical implementation of AI and the growing importance of media literacy, helping organizations navigate the tension between innovation and accountability. I also lead with a trauma-informed lens in both communications and organizational strategy, ensuring brands are human-centered in how they operate, engage, and grow.
My insights have been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Good Morning America, Newsweek, and other national outlets. I’m also a keynote speaker at national industry events, where I address the intersection of innovation, ethics, leadership, and lived experience.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Xavier University, am a Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA), and a Fellow of the American College of Health Data Management (FACHDM). I also serve as the founder and executive director of August’s Artists, a nonprofit honoring the legacy of my son through creativity, advocacy, and support for families navigating serious illness.
At the center of my work is one core principle: innovation is only meaningful if it centers empathy, equity, and lived experience. That is how we move industries forward with clarity and care.
