How Digital Outcasts Will Save Us

“Digital outcasts” is a term used to describe those left behind the technological curve due to discrimination or other attributes (social, economic, and political) commonly associated with having a disability. Inaccessible online services dehumanize users by reflecting the stigma and shame commonly felt among those disenfranchised. Disability, however, has long served as a catalyst for personal transformation in the form of grass roots innovation. Citing case studies from healthcare, creative arts, and social science, this presentation examines the historical and emergent cultural influence of digital outcasts. Attendees will discover how individuals with disabilities transcend systemic barriers, often imposed by discriminatory practices, to strengthen our digital community and celebrate all abilities and backgrounds.
