Avoid a one hit wonder: Design for Intermittent Use
Biosensors, wearables, and automated medical devices have transformed how we measure health. These markets are doubling fast, fueled by real-time data, personalized medicine and AI hype. Yet despite the promise, most devices are one-hit wonders: people start strong, then stop. That’s not a user flaw, it’s a design flaw. Many health technologies are made for continuous engagement, but human behavior is inherently intermittent—shaped by context, capacity, and life’s natural rhythms. Intermittent design creates breathing space for reflection, reduces cognitive burden, and builds trust through respectful boundaries. This approach reimagines engagement frameworks around the natural rhythm of human health behavior, specifically the ebb and flow of motivation and the seasonal nature of growth, to foster sustained engagement.
